Hi, I’m Melissa Lineburg—functional nutritionist, lifelong dancer, and the founder of Empower Performance Nutrition. My passion lies at the intersection of dance and nutrition. I hold a Masters of Science in Human Nutrition, licensure as a Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS), as a Maryland Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist, and a Washington, DC Licensed Nutritionist.
All that really to say that I know dance and I know nutrition. At Empower Performance Nutrition, I work with dancers, performance athletes, and fitness enthusiasts to unlock their full potential through balanced, sustainable nutrition habits.

A Dancer's Journey
From Restriction to Resilience
Dance has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember—my mom put me in classes at age four because I wouldn’t stop twirling around the kitchen. Dance quickly became my first love, and through my teen years, I pursued pre-professional training with dreams of turning my passion into a career. But like many young dancers, I found myself caught in a pattern of restrictive eating, believing that shrinking my body would improve my performance and open doors to opportunities.
The pressure to maintain the "right physique" followed me into my early professional career, where I struggled with body image and food. My focus on achieving a “dancer’s body” came at the expense of my overall health + wellbeing. I tried every diet I could think of, chasing the illusion of control.
Unfortunately, this led to burnout and injury—including a fractured ankle moments before I was set to perform as the Sugar Plum Fairy in my first professional Nutcracker production.
Turning Setbacks into Growth
That injury became a turning point. During my recovery, I realized I couldn’t keep living this way—constantly stressed about food, undernourished, and disconnected from my body’s true needs. I relied on my physical therapist (a dance medicine specialist) + yoga to rebuild both my strength and my mindset. Slowly, I unlearned the rigid rules I had placed on food and began to trust my body. Prioritizing balance—in movement, nutrition, and mindfulness practices—gave me a sense of freedom I never thought was possible—and it also improved my performance in ways I hadn’t imagined.
Why I Do This Work
I now understand that nutrition isn’t about restriction—it’s about empowerment. Every dancer's body is unique, and our food choices should support us, not control us. That philosophy is what led me to specialize in dance nutrition: to guide other dancers toward sustainable, balanced habits that support their physical and mental well-being, without fear or guilt.
I knew I wanted to help others avoid the struggles I had faced, so I went back to school, earning a Master’s degree in Human Nutrition. In 2021, I launched Empower Performance Nutrition. Through personalized + functional nutrition coaching strategies, I work with dancers to help them build habits that fuel their artistry, build resilience, and promote long-term health—so they can thrive in every role, from the studio to the spotlight and beyond.
